The Big Issue

Mar 31 2025
Magazine

The Big Issue is one of Britain’s leading news and cultural magazines. Every week’s edition is packed full of original takes on the biggest issues of the day as well as interviews with the most significant figures in politics and entertainment. The Big Issue was founded 1991 to give people experiencing homelessness the opportunity to earn their own income. We continue to support hundreds of vendors across the UK and all proceeds from sales go to help anyone wanting to lift themselves out of poverty.

‘I FOUND A WAY OUT OF THE DARKNESS THROUGH ART’ • Filmmaker Lorna Tucker is known for her acclaimed feature documentaries Westwood, Amá and Call Me Kate. Last year, she released a hugely personal film, Someone’s Daughter, Someone’s Son, a documentary that humanises homelessness, telling the stories of people with first-hand experience, including Big Issue vendors and Tucker herself. Having run away from home as a teenager, Tucker suffered greatly while living on the streets – experiences she didn’t discuss until the film came out. One year later, she writes about how perspectives on homelessness have shifted

YOUR MONEY • As the full impact of the spring statement, and the DWP plans for benefits, remain unclear, household uncertainty about money grows. It has been a tough time with Covid and the cost of living crisis. So clarity is more needed than ever. Even those working full-time find making ends meet a struggle. Nearly a million people – including 200,000 children – in the UK are just £10 a month away from poverty. Trussell, which runs the largest network of food banks in the UK, found more than two in five (43%) claimants had skipped meals to keep up with other essential costs in the last three months. Here, we look at what you are entitled to, how to make sure you are not caught out, some advice for money management and a look at how things are never as bleak as they seem.
